Lily of the Valley

If you've been fortunate enough to be in France on May 1st,

you may wondered about the bunches of Lily of the Valley being sold at roadside stands.

May 1st is French Labor Day, (also known as May Day or La Fete du Muguet)

and the tradition is to pick a bunch of wild Lily of the Valley to give to a friend or loved one.

How sweet! This tradition is so widespread and accepted that special regulations are in place allowing organizations to sell these bunches without having to pay the usual tax.

King Charles IX was presented with Lily of the Valley on May 1, 1561 as a good luck offering.

He liked this flower so much that he presented small bouquets of them to the ladies in his court. Later, around 1900, men began to offer these small bouquets to their lovers

and the tradition has never waned.

The dictionary description of Lily of the Valley is "a small (poisonous!) ornamental plant

with two long oval dark green leaves. Flowers: small, white or pale pink,

sweet-scented, bell-shaped, drooping, growing from a single spike."

Their scent is truly intoxicating.

As a gardener, you may know that this is an early spring-blooming perennial

that needs cold winters to return year after year.

Given the right conditions, your Lily of the Valley bed will expand year after year,

expanding through underground rhizomes.

It's official meaning is "return to happiness" and symbolizes chastity, luck and humility.

A popular flower for dainty bridal bouquets, it was one of the blooms Princess Katherine

selected for her bouquet when she wed Prince William a few years back.

Brides beware: these "pips", as they are called, can be budget-busters!

I'm especially fond of the harder-to-find pink variety,
though slightly less fragrant than the white.

Prom Time!

Perhaps it's been awhile since you last thought about prom,

but I can tell you that prom flowers have changed considerably!

Yesterday's prom flowers may have been a full size rose (or two!)
on a skimpy elastic wrist band,

but those days are over!

Today's prom flowers are a big deal.

No longer just an afterthought, they are just as important as the dress and the suit!

Let's start with the bracelet.

Today's choices are endless, and are likely to be saved after prom and worn again and again.
Beads, rhinestones, 'slap' bracelets, all contribute to the "bling" look

that today's prom-goer is looking for.

Forget that big wad of stiff ribbon, too-accents now are eye-popping!

Beaded wire, chenille, feathers, rhinestone pins, jeweled pins,

bits of lace, even pieces of caning, and mixed-media ribbons.

And don't forget the LED lights!

And of course, last but not least, the flower choices,which are endless.

Full size roses and cymbidium orchids are at the bottom of the list.

Now, the smaller spray rose is a more popular choice, as well as the mini cymbidium orchid.

Calla lilies, gerbera daisies, the tiny green Kermit mums...you get the idea.

Today's prom gal wants her corsage to be unique and reflect her personality.

And her beau's boutonniere should be just as unique.

(By the way-the boutonniere should be worn on the left lapel, not the right!).

Elements from the gal's corsage should be incorporated into his,

adding fun and whimsy to their big evening.

And prom flowers need not be limited to a corsage...

other options can include floral jewelry, or individual blooms attached directly to the skin.

(ask your florist for that little secret!).

A floral wand for the gal with a big personality.

And flowers in her hair, attached in unique ways, is a lovely finishing touch.

Ombre...the Hot New Trend!

The dictionary defines ombre as derived from the French word meaning shaded or shading.

The hot new trend in ombre now is just that....take a color, use the graduating shades of it,

you then have ombre.

Remember your grandma's crochet spread?

You probably didn't think of it as such, but yes, that was ombre!

Ombre nails have been spotted on the red carpet recently.

It takes a bit more work, but the look is so unique!

In fashion circles, the look has been around for a few seasons now.

The actress Zoe Saldana took some heat for this Givenchy ombre dress,

worn to the 2010 Academy Awards, but I thought it was stunning.

You can incorporate ombre into your own fashion statement, too!

Hair care giant L'Oreal Paris has just introduced Feria Wild Ombre,

a home hair color solution that results in hair color with graduated shades.

In your home, you can incorporate ombre into your decor.

Try the look in a bedspread.

Hot sneaker company Vans has their version of ombre...

It's even possible to incorporate ombre into flower arrangements!

Florigene, one of the largest growers of Carnations, has created a striking range of purple carnations,

called the "Moon Series". With 4 colors within the purple family, they make a natural ombre when grouped, starting with the darkest, "Moonvista" ranging to the lightest "Moonaqua" , with "Moonshade"

and "Moonlite" in between. So beautiful!

When Gwen Stephani wed Gavin Rossdale in 2002,

she wore a custom Dior wedding dress in pink ombre. Stunning, isn't it?

While it may not be for every bride, it certainly is a statement.

This ombre flower petal aisle would have been a perfect match for her!

Even the wedding cake could be ombre, in the hands of a talented cake artist.

Downton Abbey weddings

If you, like me, are a Downton Abbey addict, no doubt you waited impatiently to see what beautiful creation Lady Mary (Michelle Dockery) would don for her long-awaited wedding to Matthew Crawley.

Since the beginning of this PBS series, millions of fans have watched every week to see what new,

decadent costumes we would be treated to, as well as glorious scenes of life in a magnificent English castle. In real life, this spectacular "pile" is Highclere Castle, in Hampshire, UK.

Lady Mary's dress was very representative of the times in which the show takes place-the 1920's.

The straight silhouette, lightly adorned with Swarovski crystals, fit perfectly.

The stunner is the dainty, vintage, 45 carat diamond tiara and veil that

cost the costume department $200,000!

Add this to the cost of the gown, and this is the show's most expensive costume, by far.

This calla lily bouquet is spot on for the times.

Though often accompanied by lots of greenery in real weddings,

this was the go-to wedding flower for the day.

A few weeks later, we were treated to yet another wedding; that of the middle daughter, Lady Edith.

(played by Laura Carmichael) Unfortunately, (spoiler alert!), Edith was left at the altar, but nonetheless,

this too was a beautiful satin dress, one that I think I prefer over Lady Mary's lace sheath, if truth be told! The designer took cues from the house of Lanvin, but ultimately used a vintage train, carrying the embroidery through to the shoulders. A very elegant look. Lady Edith also wore the same family tiara.

The soft pastels worn by her two sisters are also very representative of the period.

As with Kate Middleton's (real-life) wedding to the future king of England,

it will be interesting to see what impact this series will have on wedding fashions in general.

Due in no small part to the Duchess' teardrop bouquet, we have begun seeing an interest
in wedding bouquets that have a bit of drape to them,

rather than the 'hand tied" bouquets that have been so popular for years.

Perhaps we'll see a return to more elegant attire,

such as these handsome formal waistcoats!

Even the staff 'below stairs' is elegantly attired!

Exploding flower myths

For the New Year, I thought this would be a good time we debunk some of the myths

and beliefs about flowers and flower care.

No doubt, great-grandma passed along lots of old wives tales and supposed facts,

and these have dutifully followed down through the ages. It's a new year, and time for some hard truths!

When you receive a floral arrangement from your florist, those flowers will have been properly "processed"...meaning they followed the cold chain to maintain freshness.

Once they arrive at the flower shop, they will receive a fresh cut,
allowing fresh cool water and floral food to once again flow through the stems.
It's also important to change the water in the vase every few days,
and recut the stems with a clean, sharp knife.
(Not scissors!)
Remember to keep floral arrangements out of direct sun,
and away from extreme heat and cold.

Now, let's take a look at some of these old-wives tales...

ASPIRIN:

This substance will stop the flower from forming it's own defense against the cut that was made on its stem.

BLEACH:

While it's true controlling the bacteria levels in your flower vase is important, adding bleach to the flower water will also increase the pH level of the water, so the benefits will be far outweighed.

LEMON JUICE:

Salt levels in water contribute to browning foliage,

as well as reducing the amount of water that the stems can uptake.

SUGAR:

One of the primary needs of a flower, sugar is an important component of a flower's life.

But too much sugar speeds up the development of bacteria, and bacteria is deadly to flowers.

PENNIES:

Though pennies are composed of some of the elements that flowers need to develop,

they are also covered in bacteria, and that will speed the demise of your flowers!

LEMON-LIME SODAS:

As sugar is a prime ingredient in sodas, adding this to your flower water will have the same effect
as straight sugar , which is to increase the amount of bacteria in the water.

2013 Color of the Year

It's official!

Pantone, the color people have announced that 2013's color of the year is Emerald.

I had a feeling this was coming...

I've noticed a spate of emerald dresses on Red Carpets over the past few years.
Angelina Jolie may have started it with her Atelier Versace gown at the 2011 Golden Globes.
But then along came Mila Kunis in her Vera Wang one-shoulder,
and Elizabeth Moss' elaborately draped Donna Karan strapless.
And Catherine Zita Jones was elegant in a Monique Lhuillier ballgown.

So get ready!
This strong color will appear in products ranging from furniture to fashion.
The cosmetic giant Sephora has even paired with Pantone to come up with a range of nail polish colors,
and this green hue is called "Evergreen"...
Are you bold enough to wear it?

The human eye is able to detect more shades of green than any other color in the spectrum.
Green is certainly the most abundant hue in nature.
You can see this clearly when you're in the garden...lime, pine, chartreuse, fern, moss, olive...
the shades of green seem endless.

On the color wheel, purple is the opposite of green, so pairing these two can't go wrong.

Emerald also works with yellow, and even pink...
Look how the green Dianthus makes this pink Peony pop!

So what can you pair this strong color with?

In your home, pairing it with turquoise will give off a coastal vibe.

Or use it as an accent color, such as these gorgeous throw pillows.

Floral Hairdressing

Have you heard of Takaya Hanayuishi?

A Japanese artist, he began his career in the culinary arts.

He then moved on to Floral Hairdressing, and as you'll see, the results are spectacular!

Blue flowers are always dramatic.

But this headpiece of Scabiosa, Tweedia and Delphinium

is simply stunning!

This tall conical construction of pink carnations, hydrangea and snowberries

is very reminiscent of the style that Marie Antoinette favored in the 18th century..

Wouldn't this ivory rose and ivy band be lovely for a bride?

No flowers here! Simply Equisetum and Ferns.

But what an unusual use of these materials!

Oh my goodness! I can't imagine wearing this, but isn't it spectacular?

And the mix of flowers is masterful. Orchids, sweet peas, cosmos, hydrangea...
the list of blooms goes on and on!

Wear your veggies!

This composition of broccoli, radishes, peppers, sprouts and even beans is magical,
and reminds me of the art of Giuseppe Arcimbold.

This headpiece of Bittersweet may not be comfortable to wear, or even elegant,

but there's no denying that it is dramatic!

Ikebana

Are you a fan of Ikebana?

The word "ikebana" translates roughly to "bring life to flowers".

Re-cutting and then arranging a flower is a new life for it.

Traditionally, Ikebana designs were based on 3 main lines,

symbolising the harmony between heaven, man, and earth.

So, a true Ikebana design would never be stuffed with flowers or greenery.

The "space" is just as important as the actual materials used, as is the container itself.

Ikebana is a traditional art form with a long history.

Beginning with floral offerings to Buddha, the art eventually evolved.

Today, in Japanese homes, an Ikebana arrangement would be given prominence

by being placed in a special alcove known as a tokonoma.

Today, different styles of Ikebana are taught throughout the world,
such as Nageire, which utilizes an upright container,
and Moribana, using a shallow bowl-type of container.

There are many, many more details to Ikebana,

and if your interest is piqued, I'd suggest buying a nicely illustrated book
and a few basic supplies to get started.

But be warned: you may get hooked!

Color and Scent

Color and Scent are two things that you may not give much thought to...

until they are missing or perhaps, unpleasant.

But both are actually very important in our day-to-day lives.

Consider this: food in your fridge may look fine,
you'll know instantly!

A certain perfume or cologne can remind you of someone you've not seen in ages.

Out on the road, if we weren't able to distinguish colors, (red from yellow from green, say),

we would have to rely on the shapes of road signs to help us...

Restaurants know that color is important.

Blue and purple are appetite suppresants, so if you're planning to open a diner soon,

this would not be a good choice for your decor.

However, studies have shown that red is an appetite stimulator,

and that diners given red plates ate more and stayed longer.

Retailers have discovered that shoppers are drawn to stores with pleasant scents, and

they will linger longer, increasing the chances that they will make a purchase.

Welcome to "Scent Marketing".

Smart realtors know to burn apple or cinnamon candles at their open houses,

and have fragrant potpourri strategically located throughout the home.

Nothing turns off a potential buyer quicker than smelly trash or kitty litter!

Yellow a vibrant color and is the feng shui color of sunshine.
Use it in places where you need help making decisions, protection from depression in winter,
or relief from panic and nervousness.

This room above may not be your decorating style, but you can't deny that it just feels cheerful!

Conversely, yellow in a restaurant has been found to be an irritant.

Green is nature's color. Restful, and great to use when you feel you need a boost or change.

Doesn't this all-green floral arrangement give you a lift?

Blue is the color of calm, and inspiration, and also one of the most popular colors in decor.

(remember collecting blue glass bottles?)

In your home or office, subtle scents will make a difference in your day.

Rosemary represents friendship, and it's scent can help improve your memory.

It is one of our most requested greens for bridal bouquets, signifying rememberance.

Lavender, one of the most popular natural scents, has a calming effect.

Use it for relaxation and stress reduction.

Eucalyptus is a scent that you either love or hate.

Some think it is fresh and stimulating; others find it cloying and herbal.

Popular in aromatherapy, Eucalyptus is an anti-inflammatory, and antibacterial.

Whether it's color or scent, make a point of incorporating both into your daily life,

and I promise you will see a difference!

Orchid Care

Orchid plants are a popular gift here in the shop.
Perhaps you've been the lucky recipient of one recently, and are wondering how to keep it looking it's best? Here are a few tips to help you along....

Probably the most popular orchid (and easiest to care for) is the Phalaenopsis.
They can be found in a multitude of colors, from white and yellow, on into the hot fuscias.

Water when the bark is dry to the touch, maybe once a week, and less in the winter.
Be sure your container has good drainage-often a gift orchid will arrive in a plastic-lined basket,
which will keep your orchid sitting in water-never a good idea!

Don't allow water to sit on the leaves.
The chemicals in tap water can create all sorts of fatal problems.

Though orchid blooms are long lasting, there will come a time when they will all be

finished. At that point, cut the stem to just above a node (a bump in the stem).

A north-facing window is ideal for orchids. Strong, harsh light is not!
Remember, in the wild, these plants are sheltered under the canopy of large trees,
so they will be happiest in similar conditions in your home.

You'll need patience, but after a few months, you should see some progress,

and new blooms should begin to appear.

Check the roots for green color...this will tell you that your orchid plant is happy.

Be sure to not cut the aerial roots!

Once you've had some success, you may catch Orchid Fever!

Here are some other varieties you'll want for your collection.

This is the beautiful (and fragrant) Cattleya orchid.

The coloring on this particular variety is stunning!

This is one of my favorites, and often requested in wedding work: the Vanda orchid.

Love that bold purple color!

Last, but certainly not least, the stunning Oncidium orchid.

These tiny blossoms remind me of butterflies-so sweet!

Fabulous Fall Flowers

The leaves may not have changed quite yet where you are,

but fall is in the air, and with it, requests for fall bouquets here in the shop.

Fall flowers are much more than orange mums and sunflowers arranged in a pumpkin!

This could be my new favorite colored rose!

Called "High and Magic", it's a vibrant combination of yellow/peach/orange/red,

depending on what it's arranged with.

Dahlias are a popular fall flower-and why not?

The number of varieties and colors is astounding.

The dinnerplate dahlias are impressive...

some of these blooms can be a foot across!

For the fall bride, there are beautiful flowers in tones of peach (Calla lily,)

burgundy (Leucadendron), orange (Roses)

and interesting accents such as scabiosa pods, hypericum berries and branches of all types.

Even decorative Kale can be a beautiful element in a bouquet.

After a summer's absence, fall tulips make an appearance as well, in beautiful single colors,

or some very cool striated shades, such as this gorgeous Parrot Tulip.

How about this over-the-top arrangement?
Artichoke, Kale, pinecones, blackberries,
are just a few of the gorgeous elements used;
notice there are actually very few flowers.

What is Steampunk?

Have you heard the term "Steampunk" recently?

It seems to be everywhere suddenly, but it's not new.
Google "Steampunk" on Etsy and you'll come up with loads of decorative items...

from goggles...

...to artwork.

According to Wikipedia: "Steampunk is a genre that originated during the 1980s and early 1990s and incorporates elements of science Fiction, Fantasy, alternate history, horror and speculative Fiction. It involves a setting where steam power is widely used—whether in an alternative history such as Victorian era Britain or Wild-West era United States, or in a post-apocalyptic time —that incorporates elements of either science fiction or fantasy. Works of steampunk often feature anachronistic technology, or futuristic innovations as Victorians might have envisioned them".

Believe it or not, Steampunk is becoming a hot style for design now.

Even weddings are incorporating elements of Steampunk into their decor.
Check out this bride's leather belt and wire bouquet!

Tori Spelling's reality show recently created a Steampunk wedding for one lucky couple,

right down to the cake accented with 'gears'...

Take the theme all the way through to seating cards with the addition of metal bits...

Location is important.

Nothing too perfect.

Ruins are ideal!

Overgrown is the key...

Think you can't have flowers in a Steampunk-theme wedding? Of course you can!

The trick is to be sure they aren't too sweet...

Some element of toughness needs to be incorporated, as in this chain, wire and metal key bouquet.

Making Baby's Breath the star is the unexpected twist.

Leather, feather, goggles, wire, anything 'tough' can and should be incorporated into Steampunk design, whether it's a wedding or everyday design...

Two-Toned Flowers

In the world of flower colors, two are better than one.

And bicolor roses for one, are right on trend.

"Abracadabra" one of my favorites, with its velvety petals and yellow splashes.

The "Intuition" series of roses are stunning, and available in different color combinations,

such as this "Orange Intuition".

"Sweetness", a mostly white Grandiflora rose with a not-so-subtle edging of hot pink and a sweet scent.

"Katari" is an unusual green rose with a deep pink edge.

Yes, there are true green roses, and this one takes it a big step further!

This Lisianthus variety called "Mariachi" is lovely,

with deep purple edges complimenting the sweet white petals.

Even the much-maligned Carnation is available in many different bi-color combinations

like this beautiful hot pink edged.

What's not to love?

And let's not forget everyone's favorite flower,

the magnificent Hydrangea.

This beauty is the Mophead variety called "Tivoli."

Madonna doesn't know what she's missing!

Even the already gorgeous Gerbera is available in bi-colors now.

This one is like holding sunshine in your hands!

The Rainbow Rose

Have you seen the tie-dyed rainbow rose?

If you haven't yet, then get to the phone right away and call your florist!

Before you dismiss these photos as some pretty good Photoshopping, think again.

This is a real rose, dyed in a very special process, allowing multiple colors on one flower head.

How is it done?

Different dyes are injected into the stems of white roses, which are then taken up by the individual petals.

A painstaking process, and of course, this translates into a more expensive flower than the average rose,

but the wow factor makes up for all of it.

Now, these roses aren't for everyone.

Some may think they are garish, or belong in a circus;

but just consider the uses!

How about using them in centerpieces for a tie-dyed birthday celebration?

(Think 1970's)

Or, in a wedding where each bridesmaid wears one of the colors in the rose?

They'd be really cute in a little nosegay for dance recitals.

Little girls love roses and especially love lots of color!

High School proms are the perfect place for this unusual rose.

But please no baby's breath here...this rose just begs for an unusual treatment

such as wire, beading and feathers!

Flowers, En Masse!

Fashion designer Raf Simons made his debut recently,
newly installed at the House of Dior in Paris.
For his gala opening fashion show, the walls of the hall were festooned with flowers.
In fact, 1 million blooms were used!

Yes, you read that correctly.

One. Million. Blooms.

Incredible! And all for an event that lasts 15 minutes.
Peonies, Roses, Dahlias and Orchids,
to name just a few of the varieties that were trucked in for this project.
Even more incredible is that these 'walls' were assembled in 4 days!

To create this beauty, hundreds of cases of flowers were trucked in,
then lifted with cranes standing ready in the street, and in through upper windows.
'Walls' of wet floral foam were constructed, and covered with chicken wire.

An army of workers clipped and inserted bloom after bloom,

over and over again, until entire walls were filled.

Suddenly, I am seeing massed flowers everywhere!

The artist Jeff Koons installed a floral puppy topiary
outside the Guggenheim Museum in Germany.

A few Haute-Hippie flower-bedecked vehicles have been spotted. Cute!

And how about this huge 'hand tied' bouquet?

Gotta love it!

Flower Bouquets at the 2012 Olympics

With the Olympics beginning in a few weeks, I'm betting you haven't realized that flowers will play a big part in the 2012 Olympics. Medal winners are historically presented with a flower bouquet upon reaching the podium. Ever wondered where those bouquets come from?

The custom of presenting to a winner goes back to Greek times, when an olive leaf wreath was the gift of choice. In Victorian times, flowers were preferred, as every flower had a specific meaning to the Victorians. Today, the floral bouquet is chosen and designed with many details in mind.

This year, famed British florist Jane Packer's firm has been selected to design the florals.
Their choice for the medal bouquets is a beautiful creation arranged in a quadrant to mirror this year's logo. All the flowers and greenery in the bouquet are grown in Britain, and florist students will help out with the construction. Included in the mix are: a pink rose "Aqua", a yellow rose "Illios", a beautiful orange rose "Marie Claire" and finally a green rose called fittingly, "Wimbledon".
Additionally, the bouquet will include fragrant English Lavender, Rosemary, Apple Mint and Wheat.

4400 bouquets will be presented to medalists on the podium!
Under IOC rules and protocol, there are even very specific sizes that the bouquets must adhere to.
Additionally, flowers and other materials should be pollen-free and also free of scent,
to lessen the chance of allergic reactions. They must also be able to withstand manhandling,
lack of water, and extremes of temperature.

Sadly, the cut flower trade in Britain is nearly extinct. So to achieve their aim of using only British-grown components, as one of the world's most influential florists, Jane Packer was able to partner with Landgard UK, who agreed to supply the greenhouses for use in this project, essentially re-introducing rose-growing to the South of England- a huge achievement!. Then, the actual varieties were selected and grown specifically for the Olympics bouquets, to be ready just in time for the big event-no earlier and no later. As you can imagine, all this planning happens years in advance of the actual event.

For the Vancouver winter games in 2010, the winners were presented with all-green bouquets, to signify the "Green" games. However, the spider mum, hypericum berries, Aspidistra leaves and Monkey grass clutch bouquets did not photograph well, and to some from a distance, seemed like heads of broccoli!
The stems of the 1800 bouquets were wrapped in recycled paper.
I'm betting this year's colorful selection will be much better received.

When you settle down in front of the television in a few weeks to cheer on your favorite athletes,

remember all the hard work that went into those winning bouquets!

Silver Jubilee Florals

With the 2012 Olympics about to begin, and the Queen's Silver Jubilee celebration,

London has been all abloom this year! I thought I'd share some of the sights with you.

The Queen and Prince Phillip were immortalized with a sort of "Chia-Head" of their own...
50 different varieties of flowers filled these two giant terracotta pots. Each weighed over 1500 pounds!
They were presented to the Queen and will be installed at Buckingham Palace as a permanent fixture.

In real life, the Queen decorated herself with flowers...

and of course, others gifted her with blooms, too.

Shop fronts high and low were decorated to celebrate the event.

This lush rose storefront at Smythson is fabulous!

I particularly love this crown made all of roses and mums.

The Queen's beloved Corgis are immortalized in flowers at Ted Baker...

Even the Beefeaters are celebrated in blooms...
I love their whimsical aspidistra leaf helmets!

Baubles and Beads and Blooms

There's no question that flowers are beautiful on their own.

But sometimes you just want to add some bling...

maybe to your bridal bouquet or centerpieces.

Well, you have lots of options!

You can add jewelry to your bouquet, perhaps a simple locket or jeweled buckle.

Wire is very effective in adding sparkle, as in this beautiful bouquet where it's used as a collar for the
pretty gathering of orchids, roses, carnations and hypericum berries..

Or you can go all the way, with a "Brooch Bouquet", made entirely of jewelry.

This can be a true keepsake, one to pass down to the next generation,

especially if it contains jewelry or bits that have a meaning to you and your family.

For centerpieces, you can add sparkle with beaded accents, such as these dainty pearls.

They help carry the white from the Lilies and Alstromeria down into the container itself,

creating a unified design.

Sometimes just a sprinkling of 'jewels' on the table is enough sparkle.
But these loops of silver wire, beaded at the tips, elevate this design of roses to spectacular!

And let's not forget underwater candlelight.

Its sparkle is magnified by the water and really adds so much drama to even the simplest centerpiece,

If you're like me, you love visiting open houses and model homes, especially those that are 'staged'.

(Who wants to look at someone's unmade beds and sink full of dishes?)

One item in particular that I take note of is the presence (or lack of) flowers and plants!

As a florist, I make a point of having fresh flowers in my home,

and I know the power they have on our moods.

When I visit someone else's home, the lack of flowers or plants is noticeable,

and I really feel as though something is missing.

Savvy real estate agents know that a successful open house

is more than a few balloons on the corner of the street.

Even something as simple as a tiny bouquet in the bathroom

feels luxurious, and signals an attention to detail.

Fresh flowers on the kitchen counter and a few well-placed plants

are a powerful signal to prospective buyers.

Whether the client is a flower lover or not isn't important...

the presence of living things in the home makes it feel fresh, cared-for, liveable and inviting.

How wonderful to be greeted by this beauty at the door!

Europeans know the importance of flowers in daily life.

Picking up a bouquet of flowers is as commonplace as buying the daily loaf of bread.

Why haven't we recognized the power of flowers here yet?

The point of flowers is exactly their fleeting beauty-the opportunity to enjoy something while it exists.

Lovely Lavender

Recently, I've noticed an uptick in inquiries for lavender...

both fresh, in floral arrangements, and dried for wedding work.

Lavender calms, is an antibiotic, and is an anti-depressant.

Those are great credentials!

Picture yourself in this chair and I guarantee that stress will roll right off you!

The name Lavender is derived from the Latin word "lavare", meaning to wash, and relates to this herb's healing properties. It is grown widely on the west coast of the US, as well as throughout the world.

Who hasn't seen photos of these sweeping purple vistas and wished they could transport themselves immediately?

The essential oils of the lavender are extracted and then used in countless personal care items
such as soaps, lotions, even candles and foods.

Have you tried lavender ice cream? It's not as strange as it may sound...

A bridal bouquet of nothing but dried lavender stalks, gently tied with velvet ribbon.

So sweet!

Place a pretty bunch of dried lavender near your bed for a lovely calming scent in the evening.

Is A Colorful Wedding for you?

There's something to be said for the classic all-white wedding. Chic, elegant, easy to coordinate.

But maybe that's not "you"! Maybe you're a hot-colors-all-the-way kind of bride. Great!

You'll have lots of options. You can start with Tangerine, the announced Color of the Year, a beautiful orange that isn't a Halloween kind of orange. Mixes well with hot pink, even lime green. Or, keep you palette monocromatic by using different tints and tones of orange, by going into the peaches with it.

Then there's purple. From the deepest Royal Robes purple to a soft lavender, this is a color that lends itself well to any style of wedding. Purple Hydrangea is elegant and showy. And before you poo-poo carnations, be sure to check out the deep purple carnation called "Moonvista", and its' sisters "Moonshade", "Moonlite" and "Moonaqua". Imagine domes of these on your tables-stunning! There's even a lovely lavender rose called "Cool Water" that's perfect for bringing in that pastel shade.

Of course, blue is always a classic and can be mixed with so much.

Deep blues like Iris, to lighter blues such as delphiniums all play well together,

but don't forget that on the colorwheel, blue likes yellow and red, and even orange!

Speaking of yellow, of course it melts into orange, but can also go yellow-green, especially in greenery like variegated Flax. Large and dramatic, it can fill space easily. Don't forget that you can add color with things other than flowers, too! The lemons in this unique centerpiece will scent the whole table!

Rustic Florals

Flowers by their very nature are rustic things...
in their natural home, they don't line up neatly,
leaves may be a bit chewed,
weeds intermingling with the blooms here and there.

This look can work for your floral decor, too!
Be it a centerpiece for a casual luncheon,
or a full-blown rustic-themed wedding,
incorporate some of these elements into your decor
for a back-to-nature look and feel.

A beautiful box filled with tulips and moss in a "pave" style is chic and elegant.

Nothing says rustic like burlap.
As a wrap for a country bride's bouquet,
this is about as from from fussy ribbon as you can get.

Used as a tablecloth, a runner, or simply as accents,
this humble fabric sets the tone.

Don't forget the branches!
From the majestic Manzanita to the curly willow with a mind of it's own,
branches bring the outside in.
The bleached Manzanita works beautifully in this lichen wreath.

Bark is Beautiful!
I'm not advocating that you go out and strip trees of their bark for this look...
be sure you're buying from a source that sells only naturally shed bark.

Rocks Rock!
Incorporate some beautiful stones into your tablescape for instant interest!

Moss is fantastic for adding texture.
You'll find crafters on Etsy who make moss placemats and runners.
Try marching a row of potted moss down the center of a long table.

Dianthus "Green Trick" can be a stand-in for pricey moss.
Would you guess it's a close relative of the Carnation?

More tips on Flower Care

In last week's BloomersBlog post, we reviewed basic flower care,
helping you prolong the life of that beautiful bunch of blossoms or arrangement.
We continue this week with a look at some other flowers and facts...

What flower is more majestic than the Lily?
Whether Asiatic or Oriental, lilies are comprised of a single flower stem, with multiple flower heads. The bottom flower opens first, with the rest following in succession.
Clip off the blossoms as they fade; this will encourage the rest to open.
Careful of the yellow pollen! It stains hands and clothing. Best to remove these carefully with a tissue. If you do get a bit on your clothing, don't rub! Lift the pollen off with strips of tape.

The show-stopping Hydrangea continues to be a favorite,
(regardless of Madonna's recent rant!)
The word "Hydrangea" is Latin for Water Vessel...giving you a hint that this is a heavy drinker.
If you've received a bunch of cut hydrangea, your first stop should be the bathtub!
Yes, you heard right...those big blooms will love a bath in cool water,
from a few hours to overnight.
Then, when you're ready to place them in a vase, give them a sharp cut,
and place in clean water with floral solution.

Are you getting the idea that floral solution is all-important?

Peonies, with their heavy heads, occasionally suffer from weak stems.
Simply cut them short, and float in a beautiful bowl.
They'll continue to deliver joy for several days.

Curly Willow-those curly branches in your arrangement can have another life after vase!
Simply recut the stems and place in a container of clean water, changing frequently.
You'll start seeing small white 'legs' appear...it's beginning to root!
Once you have a strong network of these, it's ready to pot into soil.
Keep it moist, especially the first year,
and you'll be rewarded with multiple stems for your efforts.

Prolong that Beautiful Floral Arrangement

Have you received a beautiful floral arrangement,
then wondered how to care for it?
Here are a few tips to help you get maximum enjoyment from your blooms!

If you received a vase arrangement,
your florist would have included a packet of floral nutrient:
don't throw it away!
For maximum life, change the water in the vase every few days,
and make use of the nutrient packet as directed.
It contains flower food as well as an anti-bacterial.
Nothing makes a flower fade faster than dirty water!

If your arrangement (such as a centerpiece),
is composed in floral foam,(known as "Oasis"),
it's vital that you keep this material wet.
Your flowers are drinking while in this material, and if left to dry,
well, your blooms will perish from thirst!

Remember that flowers have differing lifespans, and within a vase,
you may have some blooms that fade quicker than others.
Prolong your enjoyment by removing the spent blossoms.
You can begin cutting the stems shorter, or even use a different vase.
For instance, try cutting your Roses short and placing a trio in a julep cup-
so cheerful in a guest powder room or by your bedside!

Environment is important as well.
Never place your flower arrangement on a windowsill.
Though this window still life is pretty, it's a no-no!
Keep it away from hot or cold drafts.
Remove your arrangement from a room that may contain cigarette smoke.

Now, let's play with those flowers.
Have the Roses started to fade?
Pop the entire head off the stem, and use the petals in a beautiful bowl.
Add a few drops of essential oil and you have pot-pourri!

If your Sunflowers are looking less than sunny,
pull off the faded petals and you'll have a fabulous 'face'-
they dries nicely and can be added to another dried flower arrangement!
Florists love these so much we sometimes pull the petals off on purpose!

Tulips, though beautiful, have a mind of their own.
Did you know they continue to grow even after they've been cut?
For a different look, gently reflex their petals outward.
Suddenly you have a whole new flower!

You can do the same thing on a smaller scale with Alstoemeria,
giving you a fuller look.
Just a few stems of these can be a bouquet in itself!

Baby's Breath (Gypsophilia)has come a long way.
Gone are the spindly stems shoved into a tired arrangement as filler.
Today's varieties are full and fluffy.
They're even being used on their own in event work when a frothy romantic look is needed.
In your bouquet, they will probably be the last to go...
but no need to toss them away-they dry beautifully!

Supermodel Kate Moss started a wedding revolution last year
with her boho-chic wedding to rocker Jamie Hince.
Her florist, Vic Brotherson of London's Scarlet & Violet florist,
notes that this modern retro look is right on trend right now.

Covered shoulders are making a comeback-
we can thank Princess Catherine for that.

Demure dresses, either accented with,
or completely made of lace, are all the rage.
Kate Moss's John Galliano-designed dress was deceptively simple,
but on closer inspection, revealed beautiful details.

Flowers are soft, with a "just picked from the garden' loose feel.
Kate's petite bouquet was composed of Lisianthus, Marguerites
and garden roses, in soft blush colors.
Even her jewelry was understated.

Accents of nature are everywhere,
from rustic containers made of birch bark,
to centerpieces of succulents.
Kate's nature-inspired centerpieces were composed of
blousy garden roses, Queen Anne's Lace and other delicate blooms.
